* * *

Steph felt the thrill of excitement start in her belly and spread in radiating waves. She trembled so hard surely Damen saw. Yet he scowled down at her as if she’d done something wrong.

He looked so fierce. As if he wanted to fight rather than kiss. As if this were some battle between them.

Slowly she processed his words. Not just the shiver-inducing promise of sexual satisfaction but that revealing comment. I don’t want to stop.

Steph didn’t pretend to be an expert about Damen but she knew some things about him. One was that he guarded himself. He thought before he acted, each action planned and scrutinised. He didn’t rush headlong into things but considered them, then worked out the strategy that would best suit his needs, like hiring a faux-girlfriend.

He’d even taken a pragmatic approach to his love life, guarding against importunate lovers via his arrangement with Clio.

Yet there was nothing pragmatic about his expression now.

He looked different, his features stripped back as if passion had scoured any softness from his face. Yet Steph felt no fear, just fellow feeling. It was the same for her. As if their kiss had stolen away the comfortable platitudes she surrounded herself with and left only a single truth.

She wanted Damen, and no amount of prevaricating or pretending could change that.

Beneath her palm his heart thundered.

They were equals in this. He’d admitted as much. It wouldn’t be safe. It would be wild and ecstatic. But maybe just once in her life she should discover what that felt like. Step off the straight and narrow and let herself go.

It wasn’t as if Damen would be around long term, interfering with her life or trying to turn a moment’s wildness into something more significant.

The choice was hers.

Steph moistened her lips, aware of Damen’s eyes following the movement. It sent a corkscrew of heat twisting through her.

‘I’m not experienced.’

His head reared back as if he needed to distance himself and Steph felt a jerk of dismay at that tiny withdrawal. Damen blinked, his eyes narrowing as if wondering if he’d heard right.

‘Not very experienced?’

Was this a deal-breaker for him? Pride told her if her virginity was a problem, then tough, he’d be the one to miss out. But she wanted him so badly. Couldn’t imagine turning back now.

Her chin rose and she focused on a point beyond his shoulder. ‘It doesn’t matter. Forget I spoke.’

Warm fingers cupped her chin and turned her face to his. ‘It matters, kopela mou.’ He breathed deep, his chest a living wall before her. ‘Thank you for telling me.’ He paused. ‘It’s an unexpected...responsibility.’

She opened her mouth to say it wasn’t a responsibility, just a physical fact she thought he should know about. But before she could speak his mouth covered hers.

This kiss was different. Not desperate or wild. It was light, gentle, but with no less purpose and no less pleasure. It was a kiss that tasted sweet with promise, heady with longing and as it went on something vital melted inside her.
